😂 I get it. He’s revered but what he was doing here is indefensible if you are a reporter. His tactics to make a name for himself are closer to propaganda, and spin than legit reporting. He may have went to school for whatever, I am commenting on what he actually spent his career doing. If doing work on behalf of an agent or player is the gig, sign me up. I’ll interview D-Lo! Help him get his next deal, and then I can hang out with him later at the roller rink. That's exactly what the job is! And 29 GMs know that, and actively use that to their advantage. Kahn did not. That's not a negative on the writers, that's a negative on Kahn for not crafting those relationships. So after those Woj pieces, and Simmons hit on him, he should have reached out and befriended them, or asked for their blessing?

I mean he spoke to local beats all the time. Unlike Hinkie.
I hear Rosas was a little buttery (not in a good way).

If Wolves had just not been covered as they mostly were up to that point it would have been way easier for the slow build. I do think we’ve learned the process is more than three years, unless you happen to be drafting in a year like Presti first run was.
I like Giddey, but it remains to see if those other picks are the future KD’s and Westbrook’s his first go round was.

Who do we think gave Woj intel to break the Mil Bogdanovic deal hours before it was legal?
Look at his work during the Harden deal, though that was complicated by the fact Marks is another one of his dudes, but ultimately Egg takes priority for him.

I think people can have differing opinions on Kahn, Simmons, and Woj, what was going on in how DK was covered was extremely bizarre, and unlike anything either have done since.
I do think it was a product of that specific time, it’s evolved today, and every team has local pods and beats that I think are mostly doing a good job. I mean, if Kahn were happening today he would be on those, or having beers with some of those guys in summer league.
The problem is all the local stuff, or kind of straight ESPN interviews were suffocated by an extremely small group of pundits that were kind of first to the party, and for some reason Wolves were the target.
Kahn came up in sports writing, he’s not unfamiliar with he column style smack talk but again this was a sustained, coordinated, and often on behalf of rival “sources.”

If they had so much success writing about him that way, why didn't they do it again to have more success? How do you know Kahn would be having beers in summer league? If he was a good guy that was easy to work with and built relationships, he would still be around the NBA in some fashion. Honest question, are you related to him?

David let me borrow his unicycle to get home in time to watch my programs. This was before DVR. Lowe was still coming up, his stuff would be more like jumping in on the NBA punching bag at Grantland. Here’s an example of how it manipulated Love and fans during this period. Souhan, and Canis took on this cool attitude. A little like how Breitbart became the back bone of am radio joints. True beats like JK and Zgoda covered it pretty straight. The point is your personal relationship is not the job. When a deal or contract is reported the job is to report this, maybe give some context to similar players, some informed opinion. Unfortunately this is not what lends to writers becoming household names. I mean I think the true fans get it, certainly now but in 2010 when you heard a blowhard with “intel” you assumed it was legit. We all have a better understanding today. Some of these guys act critical of this kind of thing now, but it’s exactly why anyone knows who they are.

Yes, and check out the one he gave on the Adelman hiring. He was among the main guys that framed Ricky not coming as Kahn failed, even though it was understood unless he was like top three, due the buyout he likely couldn’t. Because of this Love also assume RR never plays here. It was straight trash, and even at the time I was like what is happening?!!

Because of this Love also assume RR never plays here. It was straight trash, and even at the time I was like what is happening?!! Well Marc Spears wrote the KLove one, Woj did the other. LOL I love this line at the end: "David Kahn still has his office, his business cards, but a lousy sportswriter turned farce of a GM is back where he started: trying to win Adelman’s respect, trying to stay an insider on the coach’s team." That is super aggressive, I get what you're saying. I will say there were similar (maybe not as extreme) articles written about Joe Judge/Dave Gettleman, Urban Meyer, and many other awful coaches/front offices. The one difference I see is that the Love article is clearly Love telling his side of it, and the Adelman piece is clearly giving his side of it. I don't blame the journalists if they are given exclusive access to something that will get as many clicks as those did. I also think that we won't see those types of long form articles anymore, since Twitter is the predominant news source in sports now.

I can share later once I find it. But really the context of that Love one is, I mean imagine Dwight or Carmelo doing that? They would have been killed, I mean they were criticized for far, far less.

Or Towns for that matter. If Towns did what Love did, resigned, then did a interview trashing his teammates he would be destroyed in sports media.

If he tries to move him it is for sure getting leaked. He was screwed by Love.
It’s like the Micheal Scott quote, you expect to get screwed by your work place, you never expect to get screwed by your girlfriend (or in this case Love).

This is also the time people were like, he’s one of the best 🤣. A true pro and not at all the guy from American Psycho.
And the other big story that was totally blown out of proportion was the Decision. That’s when I realized we might be kind of screwed as a society.

And he did not get trashed for it either - sports news and journalists LOVE drama. They wouldn't try to squash that. I also think that you dig your own grave - if Kahn had a better relationship with Love, and Love trusted Kahn, would he do that article?

Also the framing of either or on Rubio five year versus Love was never true. I mean they also had the number two pick. They could have traded for a rookie or first round in 2013.
The point is if you have one five year designated max, and you don’t think Love is that guy (he wasn’t) you shouldn’t have give it to him just because Woj is buddies with Schwartz, and trying to help mitigate Love’s broken hand thing from coming out.

Again it’s not really about those two, as much as how one team was covered, oppose to everyone else. Butler was not even close, unless you think Nichols was doing anything remotely similar in terms of coverage. She was not.

Ultimately my take is less about Kahn, and more about how two petty writers successfully killed what should have been and incredibly fun, interesting decade of Wolves basketball. Remove the personality, or whatever you thought of Kahn the person, this was the craziest thing I have ever seen in sports media, and there isn’t anything comparable to it. I also think it’s a bit of a mirror in terms of the voices that gain a following, are generally pro trolls to a degree, which is the parallel I was making with talk radio. That and it’s outsized influence that was so unique to it’s time. Writers have been ignoring and putting down the Wolves for years. This is nothing new just in the Kahn era. The problem is that they were mostly RIGHT during the Kahn era.

The problem is that they were mostly RIGHT during the Kahn era. Well, neither one of them have covered the Wolves even remotely similar since, presumably because they were successful. It's a fascinating time to look back at media in general, but especially sports media, and the NBA, which prior, there wasn't really a separate sports media dedicated to the NBA. In one of the BS reports, Bill asks Chad Ford what gm's expect to gain, by giving him intel, and his answer was trading information. So what happens, if Chad Ford is more friendly with say Steve Kerr (gm around the time), than another? Is he playing it straight, and given both parties info on what a team their talking to maybe has on the table, or is willing to part with? What if the gm he's friendly with says, a rival gm is an asshole, should he say on a podcast things like no one likes that gm, or he's an idiot? Where were any of these guys on Sterling/Sarver? This hard nose, fact driven journalism, can't believe Woj didn't crack the case on those!

I just remember how drastic this change in coverage was, same with the decision. Everything just went to 11. Truly there is no need for national media to actively campaign for a player to get a super max or not, and if Ainge had Love, he was eligible for a five year max, there is no way they cover it as Celtics have to sign him, he is clearly a number one guy. I also really like the visual of David Kahn riding a unicycle to work, with one of those old newspaper boy hats from the 50's.
