Not sure if this was discussed in another thread or if it should go here in general... I'm not going to share links to the pod or article so not to drive views, but apparently Pat Bev said on a podcast and then The Athletic did an article on how Ant needs a bigger stage than MN to reach his full potential. It's already starting. Blerg. Johnny K's latest podcase (which dropped today) is discussing this very thing. As he pointed out, this is really an issue with the NBA in general as no other sports seem to have this "you have to be in LA/NY" mentality. Plus its BS. All kinds of stars in the NBA get marketing and attention when they are in smaller markets. the issue is the NBA cant get out of its own way catering to the NY's and LA when it comes to nationally televised games. They are still in the dark ages where they think that everyone only wants to see the big markets. If I'm not mistaken, we had the most parity in the league in years last year and werent the numbers up? I've always said: parity equals ratings.

Meh. PatBev will say anything to draw attention. For sure, but that Athletic following it up with an article kind of makes it a thing even if it shouldn't be. I don't think it's good for the league to always have this stuff come up. It never does with the NFL.

The league loves super teams. Ja's really the only one I haven't heard heads try to encourage splitting.
They tried their hardest to get Rubio traded before his arrival, you better believe that was part of the reason they killed us last year. Bucks have always been under the gun with Giannis.
I agree it's a problem, and why the second apron was desperately needed. It factors in when they ignore injuries for some teams, and not others, and create narratives that make it seem like all these other teams are dumb for not recruiting KD in his prime after playing him in the Western Conference finals. The main goal of the NBA the last decade has been to keep Steph in the mix.
I don't think pressure is bad, I just don't like a media that works so hard to make their own bullshit narratives come true, the league should step in with some fines/tampering on some of this, but I get it would be hard to regulate. It's also an issue of the talk radio/24 hour thing, and they have to come up with a debate everyday, this is an easy one.
If a team like ATL, Miami, or Lakers said we're eyeing cap space when Haliburton and Ant next deals are coming up, it's in the cards. What I don't get is why some teams get those guys to do sign an trades for them, while teams like the Wolves or Bucks often feel "cornered" into a lesser deal, or having to take back a deal with like one of two teams they've given us.
We already saw some of the "horrible whites" glow about how Suns "could be a destination now" which leads me to believe one or all of them have vacation homes there.
That said if McD really does take a leap we're all hoping for, suddenly recruiting to pair with Ant and McD becomes a lot more appealing, as guys can kind of imagine, or have an idea of how they fit there. OKC's clock should be ahead of where we are though with SGA, I mean his core is all younger than he is, say Chet or Giddey goes down, SGA wasted three years collecting assets, how long is he supposed to be in limbo, but Presti's teams also miraculously never really get critiqued for that, however, they did that year following the bubble season, when they lost a game by 70, which the league reacted by saying they were going to crack down on that last year, as a result you saw teams like Utah and Orlando compete further into the year.

What I am thinking about is what player should Wolves be targeting? We would have equal chance recruiting as our soon to be division rivals in the East.
The other thing I am watching for is A-Rod and Lore. I know they made a blood pact with Glen Taylor about keeping the team here, but similar thing happened with Seattle/OKC after they had added Westbrook and KD (part of why the original process avoided any media/fan scrutiny at the time).
If Wolves develop a nice playoff core, and have an all-time face of the franchise in Ant, all they have to do is say they can't get money the way they hoped, or intended for an arena, and they'll do whatever they want.

Heard on the Berriero show that Finch is going to be calling many more plays this year. He's adding more structure by allowing less freedom.
If true, I'll jump for joy. Just what we need.

I'm a Finch guy but it shouldnt have taken him an entire year to realize our players maybe arent skilled/high BBIQ enough to run a free flow offense. He was a bit slow on the take on this one.

He's kind of making the rounds with it, Dane did it first, which is funny because I saw JJ was calling it like one of the most profound conversations he's ever had, unless that was referencing another vid.
To me one of the things that makes it so notable is how dismissive he was of the idea up until exit interviews after that Denver series. And it's not just about needing with Kat and Rudy, we had the same problems two years ago, but no one could tell given the * year.
Minnesota Mike was a big proponent of it as well, and had a couple good soundbites where he's saying some of the pro's of it, guys knowing when to cut and what not, Rubio obviously was like I don't get what we're doing here just standing around. To me it's like we spent three seasons figuring out something that every coach normally starts with.
Way too often it felt like it was give it to Lo, or Kat, or Ant, have them survey the floor, and then go into whatever their narrow lanes were. The point of offense is getting the defense to react to you, which is hard to do if everyone's standing around trying to decide what to do. Finch is unique in terms of surviving those losses we had last year, and his turn suggests he is aware of that.
New look O, specifically closing games is what I am most excited about this season, outside obviously of fingers crossed, good if not perfect health.

And really underrated how spacing/structure improves not just offense, but rebounding, getting back on d, especially in the fast pace era of teams trading j's like a pick up game.

On the Dane pod with Kilborn, Kilby said that he had dinner with Barreiro, Jonny K, and Rosen and they were talking about a new stadium. Consensus was there's no way it can all be privately funded. Also mentioned that it'll be on the same plot that Target Center is at now. Sounds like Lore wanted to move it to the suburbs and make Lore-ville as they put it. Probably will have to expand the plot that the stadium is on.

It would have its headaches though, I assume they'd have to play at XCel for 2 seasons at least. If it's centrally located in Minneapolis though, I think it becomes a political fight and I don't know if Minneapolis is willing to support another stadium. On the positive side, both Target Field and US Bank have done well for the city and I think US Bank is even paid off already, probably some market factors that influenced that but that's pretty good. There's no great alternative site in Minneapolis aside from the existing Target Center site. There's just to much parking/amenities built into that area that can't be duplicated unless you make the decision to move to the suburbs where I think the Bloomington/Eagan area starts to be the competitor to an existing site solution.

As someone who's had season tickets since 2005...I will be sad to lose my current seats, but we really do need a new stadium. I'm sure I'll be priced out however as there is no way I'm paying any kind of "seat license" or anything like that. The new stadium should also remain downtown where Target Center currently is. They mentioned even expanding to take over the Butler Square area...which would be cool. In general though, you have to have a vibrant downtown to keep us as a great city. Downtown is a bit "down" right now (pun intended) but I think it'll come back. I enjoy going downtown for games and feel completely safe.

There's a lot of space in that area that could be had in the current market and the Butler building always felt a little underutilized. I think it's a historic site so you'd have to do some interesting things potentially. The plot and surrounding area is not the problem. Just the actual TC structure which had little imagination but that's the way it was back then. Downtown revitilization efforts probably hinge on this area and squaring off Nicollet and making it a pedestrian haven for dining, shopping, and free of cars and traffic. I hope they think big. I'd prefer to retire in a downtown condo then on a lake if given the choice but a lake is pretty enticing. I just don't want to deal with upkeep though.

I think it would be a great thing if they revamped that whole area right there. I think they will think big, just considering our owner is building a city of the future. A entertainment district would be a great play to get people involved and back downtown. There's already so much great life in the area near Target Center. One of the biggest benefits is that it's close to the North Loop, which is so young and vibrant, which also is the type of demographic they need to be attracting. I may be biased because I live here, but Kansas City has a downtown area called the Power and Light district that is across the street from the T-Mobile Center. It's 2 stories of bars and restaurants connected by a central square that has a stage where live music is hosted. For example, during the summers, they have country artists come out and play on the stage and all the bars are open. People will be inside the bars, but can come out and stand and listen to the music and then move onto another bar as they please. For bigger shows, they ticket the performance, otherwise it's free to the public. Additionally, for Chiefs, Royals, and Sporting KC games, there are often watch parties hosted here, with local radio stations emceeing the event. Something of that nature should be exactly what the Wolves should look to do. It not only drives people downtown, but also drives business in the area. In the second picture, Power and Light is the Kansas City Live area. WHEN the Wolves make their Finals run with Ant, Jaden, and Tyrese Halliburton leading the way, that area could be a great place for fans to gather to watch the game. The Deer District in Milwaukee is the same concept as this, just in a city with a basketball team. This is what Lo-Rod should be looking at to build a stadium that makes money, as they are known to want to do.

I know there is some weird group of owners in that mix that prevents things from changing but get away from the nightclub scene in downtown and start to push the North Loop and dining scene into the TC area. I was too young to go to the Block E when that was in play but I agree 100% that downtown is ripe for another redevelopment in that area. The area around the Target Center has changed for the better but they need to clean up the couple of blocks surrounding the light rail. Can they get Sneaky Pete's and Dream Girls out of there? Let's hope so. They need to go the way of the dodo bird.

I've heard Cleveland also did it right once they got LeBron. Hopefully Ant can have that kind of impact, and we develop something really cool.
Be good with St Paul, Butler Square or current location. Lot of good options, but MSP def feels more like the basketball city.

Edwards was, quite inappropriately, asked by a European reporter which of his teammates would he rather trade: Towns or Rudy Gobert. At first, Edwards merely looked off the ridiculous query. Then, when he was done being questioned about something entirely reasonable, Edwards actually paused, turning back to the disrespectful media member and strongly declared: “Neither one, man. I like all my teammates. I love them. They my brothers. I wouldn’t trade neither one of them.” It was the most impressive moment from Edwards, in terms of his development from prospect to superstar. Far more than anything he did between the painted lines. – via Jake Fischer @ Yahoo! Sports

The clear hurdle standing before Anthony Edwards, though, has always been the former No. 1 pick’s development into a winning basketball player. While it’s clear Edwards has the ability to spark an explosive scoring burst at any moment, there were conversations among Team USA coaches and players about Edwards finding the balance of when to shoot and when to distribute. It’s the same tug and pull Timberwolves officials have been talking about with Edwards dating back to December, when he was lifting Minnesota out of a hole left by Karl-Anthony Towns’ lingering calf injury. Still, throughout the World Cup, it seemed for every highlight dunk, for every breathtaking step-back 3, Edwards was also prone to throwing the ball away, traveling or lurching into an ill-advised fadeaway. – via Jake Fischer @ Yahoo! Eight-year NBA veteran Elfrid Payton has worked out for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets, league sources told HoopsHype.
The 29-year-old point guard has averaged 10.1 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.0 rebounds in 500 career regular-season games.

Sports IMO the honest truth is that there's too much hype around Ant right now. Wolves fans have suffered so long that when someone as charismatic as Ant comes along with so much natural ability that we dive all the way in right away with local media leading the way. I'm not saying Ant can't get there, but he's got farther to go then most of us really want to admit. He's more volume scorer than efficient scorer at this point and he's a great playmaker or rebounder. He hasn't really learned how to draw fouls. While he can play excellent individual defense when focused, he's not a good defender overall given his lapses in concentration and off ball struggles. It's not fair to put the USA losses even mostly on Ant, but he isn't blameless there either. He's not capable of being the engine of a heliocentric offense given his efficiency and lesser playmaking, but his current game is to play like a heliocentric guy. That can work once in a while, but as we saw, it's not a long term strategy. Via poor planning, the US team needed a guy like Shai or a KD to be "the guy" and that was a little beyond Ant at this point. Again, not saying Ant can't get there. I just feel that too many locally already have Ant as a sure fire 1st team All-NBA guy in the next 2-3 years. I think that's far from a sure thing. Ant has shown he can be the best guy on a mid 40s level win team. At present course, I could see that being upper 40s or 50 wins. If an Ant led team is going to get to mid 50s wins though, the trajectory needs to change. I'll probably get roasted for writing this.

It's a take, but I couldn't agree less. He is so far ahead of what anyone thought he would be.
If anything our dicking around with Kat and D-Lo set him back. Just a matter of offense/purpose, are we standing around looking at each other, or do we have a plan to the rock moving/maintain spacing when we come down the floor. Offense solves all of our issues.
Really the games I saw Ant was laying low, and just moving the ball. The only game I know of he got shot happy was that game he scored 35.
The funny thing with Finch is he could dial up anything he wanted last year, instead of treating offense as "the secret" and players have to discover on their own while watching D-Lo go into whatever non-sense he was doing early. Free flowing, and teaching players what works doesn't mean the coach can't aid in that. That stretch Ant took over and we were awesome Ant specifically credited Finch for telling him what to do.
If we just want Ant to score as much as possible we can do that, but no one wants that. Fans don't want that heliocentric guy, Finch doesn't want it, because unlike Luka we also heavily rely on him to defend.
As for taking plays off on d during the NBA season, see the NBA regular season. You're not even supposed to play defense over here, let alone keeping that intensity up for 82 games. I do think defense, size were problems for team USA, but honestly if they built their O in a way for Ant to score every trip down like a KD or SGA, surround him with Dort, and Villain Brooks they probably have more success than trying to incorporate Brunson, Ingram, Bridges, Haliburton, Reeves.
The idea that Ant's d was an issue for team USA, compared to his teammates is silly. Wolves have a little more purpose on offense they don't drop those turd games last year in the regular season. Ant has shown he has the chops to takeover on both ends of the court in a playoff series. I don't see much changing there.
Ant Man is FO REAL, and has been out the gate, just give him the reps. Or swap Finch and Spo and see what happens.

Sometimes it feels like if they win Finch is going to get credit for Ant's development, and if they lose it will be because Ant's not doing enough somehow.
During the course of a basketball game mistakes are normal. For some reason it seems like folks are expecting the perfect game out of him night in and night out, oppose to like McD who's a threat to punch any nearby scaffolding, or Kat who will do Kat things, and we just have to deal with it.
No player, whether it's Steph or Joel is never making mistakes. Quickest way for Warriors to drop a lead is try to make Steph play point or defense, it's just when you're a shooter no one ever says you have a bad game, because got to keep chucking, it really doesn't change your play make or miss when that's all you do.
None of the success the last two years is happening without Anthony Edwards. Let him be a young player, and enjoy the excitement of having this young stud. The explosiveness, and athleticism that guys have right when they come in the league is so fun, it goes quick.
People aren't sitting around knocking Ja for his defense.

There really aren't stats to back up what you're suggesting because Ant's stats really aren't projecting the superstardom you apparently see for Ant. If you can show me the superstar that started as slowly as Ant has in advanced metrics, I'd love to have that comp. I would predict a lot of angst for you going forward. You've projected this path for Ant that has been held back by speculative things like DLo, coaching, etc. When he doesn't live up to your projection it's going to be natural to keep using those excuses as the reasons why it's not working out. We'll be 7 years out and you'll be referencing DLo and Finch as the factors that stunted Ant's development.
