No surprise here:
Shams Charania✔@shamscharania The Minnesota Timberwolves are declining center Justin Patton’s third-year team option, league sources tell me and @jonkrawczynski.

I wonder if we'll have more regrets from everything that happened that blew up the KG/Marbury/Googs potential teams and the poor maneuvering at that time vs the Jimmy/KAT/Wiggins potential teams and every subsequent move that undermined this groupings future. The Patton pick is a big part of things going off the rails immediately after we had a promising roster.

No surprise. Hopefully he's able to put this stuff behind him.
It was always a curious pick to select a center with Towns on the roster and having resigned G. John Collins, O.G. Anunoby, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Jordan Bell all would have made more sense based on the depth chart.

There may have been individual posters who advocated for Collins (John or Zach) or OG or Kuzma or whomever over Patton. But of all the things to be upset at Thibs over, picking Patton isn't high up on my list because Patton was overall valued similarly as those players going into the draft. And while I personally wanted OG, I'm also not that upset at Thibs, in his draft as GM for the Wolves, for picking Patton even when we had depth at that position - because I'm willing to give my GM, in his first draft, the benefit of the doubt and Thibs said he thought it was a homerun-swing type of pick. Dude didn't have foot problems prior to joining us. This is just awful injury luck, and we're doing the right thing to cut bait literally as quickly as we can.
Thibs's legacy, as horrendous as it is, will still be positive overall when it comes to drafting if Okogie continues to show up as he's been, and if KBD can prove to be something of value. Having Patton not work out for reasons that were unforeseeable is frustrating as heck, but it's about the bottom of the list in terms of things that I'll gripe at Thibs about.

I can agree with the part that Patton seemed to be similarly valued. He seemed to have a range that went from 14-32 that year though so we were near his absolute peak when I think back to mock drafts. But drafting a center when you had KAT as the franchise center and G as a serviceable backup is not defensible. When I think of a home run swing at that point, Lavine is the perfect example and Flip put him in a position to work on all the areas he needed to work on his rookie year where he played a ton of minutes. Drafting Patton as a home run pick and failing to recognize he had no logical way to get any minutes in the front court is horrendous decision making. It also is a tremendous misread on the direction of the league that Thibs has tried so hard to fight in his 2+ years as coach. The Patton pick was a microcosm of Thibs not really understanding the modern NBA and how to construct a roster as GM.

I would've preferred that we took OG, certainly. But I don't mind allowing a new GM to use an asset like the 16th overall pick to take what he considers a home run swing -- even when that home run swing is best suited at a position that at the time was stacked on our roster. That absolutely does not counter your well-expressed concerns, by any means. Of all the multitude of swings-and-misses that Thibs has taken during his two-plus years here, this is the least offensive, though, to me.
