I don't think anyone really thought the Wolves might get the Detroit pick this year as it's top-13 protected, but the Pistons are currently 7-8 and in the 5th position in the East. Obviously it's still early, but the Pistons are getting some veteran contributions by Beasley, Harris, and Hardaway to complement the younger guys who are playing better. Given the state of the East, it's certainly possible (probable?) that the Pistons hang around in the middle of the pack. It could come down to the play in to determine if the Wolves get a pick this year. Even if they keep the pick, it's looking like a really good bet that Wolves get that pick at some point. I believe the protection drops to top-11 in 26 and top-9 in 27 and there was some reason to think that Detroit could be that bad going forward, but from what we've seen this year I like the Wolves chances to get the pick at some point.
The Wolves could use a developmental big with defensive potential to groom behind Rudy. Not sure about any of the prospects this year, but some decent bigs have been drafted in the teens the last few years.
Ware was drafted by Miami this year. He's huge and has some 3 pt potential. Not sure yet on his long term potential yet, but there could be something there.
Lively went 12th and someone like that would obviously be a great fit.
Duren, Mark Williams, and Kessler went in the teens/early 20s in 22. Not sure how great any of them are, but all still have decent potential in there own way allowing for different factors.
Sengun went 16th in 21. Obviously he's not a defense guy, but getting an all-star level big in the teens is still a win.
Duke has a freshmen center this year who's currently projected as a top 10 guy, but so was Lively. Bigs without obvious shooting ability tend to drop so maybe he falls?

The bolded and underlined above is what really sticks out to me. The East is baaaaaaaaad right now. Multiple playoff spots are definitely up for grabs. I'm curious how Detroit will choose to attack the season. They've been so bad for so long, so getting a play-in spot would probably be great for fan and team morale. But, on the other hand, there is the possibility that they lose that pick. If they think they're close to being a playoff team, what does that pick do for them. They could absolutely cash it in in a trade with some of their younger players to go all-in on a star should a star come available. Or, they could, as you say, find a guy in that range who could potentially come in and contribute. 7-8 is an encouraging start for Detroit. Aside from the pick protections, I want to see them do well. I love Cade, and have since he was in college.

They're sick of being a lottery team. And they're much improved. They hired a much better coach and added some legit veterans to help the kids. They might not make the Playoffs, but it won't be because of tanking.
