I don't follow hockey all that much, but wow, did the wildcard team really just beat all the #1 seeds lol? That's banana's. 8 seeds never beat 1 seeds in the NBA playoffs, but it happens all the time in hockey.
Dallas 4-2 over Nashville Colorado 4-1 over Calgary Columbus 4-0 over Tampa Bay Carolina 4-3 over Washington
What's the point of being the best team? Might as well get to a decent record and then just coast the rest of the year resting starters. Tampa Bay goes 62-16-4 and gets swept in the first round lol? They got smoked in those last 3 games too.

Hockey's generally been like that. There's only been two President's Trophy winners since the 04-05 lockout to win the Cup. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidents%27_TrophyThe league hasn't had its best teams consistently in the Cup final since the late 90's and then before that the Gretzky-era Oilers.

Never a fan of Nashville but Columbus is known to come alive in the playoffs. A couple of years ago they beat the Wild and we were the upper seed and they were the lower seed.

This year seemed worse than others as far as the lower seed upsetting the higher seed goes, but it's something I've noticed for awhile now. How it happens more often in hockey. Home field advantage doesn't seem to mean as much in hockey as it does other sports. I'll dive into the stats to paint a better picture.

Since 2010 here are the home records of all teams in the regular season compared to post season. REGULAR SEASON POST SEASON W L T PCT W L T PCT NBA 7110 4949 0 .590 479 270 0 .640 NFL 1315 982 7 .572 58 32 0 .644 NHL 6487 4008 1377 .546 432 362 0 .544 MLB 11724 10143 0 .536 175 144 0 .549 Obviously those aren't ties in the NHL column, they're OT losses so here they just count as losses. MLB has the worst regular season home field advantage, and it's the NHL in the post season. It's quite the advantage to have home field in basketball and football however. And for whatever reason, there's a noticeable decline for NHL teams in the post season. Statistically you can say it's about the same, but in the post season the better teams have more home games and are always matched up against the worst teams, so that should result in a much better post season home record over the regular season, like the NFL and NBA. To me it would almost make more sense for a good team to rest it's starters more often at the end of the regular season even if it means losing more often and slipping into a lower seed. Their players will be better rested and healed up for the post season run, and they'll be off the radar.

Given the home records, next I wanted to look at how each seed has fared in the playoffs since 2010. The series column is obviously how many series that seed won/lost, and the overall column is the total number of games won/lost. MLB 1st Round: seed series overall W-L W-L 1 5-4 21-15 2 3-6 19-22 3 6-3 21-19 4 1-3 6-11 5 3-2 10-10 MLB All Rounds (except championship): seed series overall W-L W-L 1 15-12 68-58 2 14-13 66-62 3 14-14 62-71 4 7-8 34-33 5 4-7 22-28 NBA 1st Round: seed series overall W-L W-L 1 16-2 68-28 2 17-1 70-23 3 15-3 65-41 4 6-12 47-59 5 12-6 59-47 6 3-15 41-65 7 1-17 23-70 8 2-16 28-68 NBA All Rounds (except championship): seed series overall W-L W-L 1 36-11 160-92 2 39-10 172-92 3 20-17 110-102 4 12-16 78-88 5 13-18 75-96 6 3-18 45-77 7 1-18 23-74 8 2-18 34-76 NHL 1st Round: seed series overall W-L W-L 1 15-3 64-37 2 9-9 56-50 3 10-8 53-51 4 7-11 52-57 5 11-7 56-52 6 10-8 57-49 7 5-13 40-63 8 5-13 42-61 NHL All Rounds (except championship): seed series overall W-L W-L 1 25-16 132-106 2 17-15 96-90 3 21-14 107-101 4 12-16 84-84 5 16-17 94-102 6 18-15 104-94 7 7-17 58-83 8 10-16 66-81 The NHL switched to a goofy divisional playoff seeding format in 2014 so they no longer had 1-8 seeds, but I still seeded them based on the old 1-8 conference seeding for this data. #1 didn't necessarily face #8 in the 1st round those years. To my surprise, the #1 seed does quite well in the NHL, but other than that it almost doesn't matter what seed you end up with. And it has not been as great as it should be to be a #2 seed in baseball or hockey the past decade lol. In baseball it no longer seems important which seed you end up with, all you gotta do is make the playoffs and you got a pretty good shot.
