Dane Moore@DaneMooreNBA The new players from Philadelphia all participated in shootaround. No determination on who is starting.
“The challenge is how quickly can we come together?” -Thibodeau
jace frederick@JaceFrederick Assuming Covington and Saric play tonight, it’s going to be REALLY interesting to see how the rotation shakes out
Assuming Thibs sticks with his 9 man philosophy, two guys will fall out of the rotation

Worth noting that Robert Covington walked out of the gym after shootaround wearing a white starters jersey. Thibs declines to say whether the new guys would start.

Covington absolutely has to start.
The Teague/Rose backcourt just gets destroyed on defense. Teague generally can't be bothered to defend the point and Rose, at SG, is among the very worst defenders in the league.

Listening to Jared Dudley rip Thibs mundane & outdated system and judge Wiggins' energy & pull-ups is very satisfying and validating for many fans I think. 0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes

Not surprised, Dudely was pretty candid a year or so ago about not wanting to play for Thibs when there were rumors of us being interested in him.

If Thibs is smart (insert joke), he absolutely would start Covington and Saric at the 3 and 4 along with Teague, Wiggins and KAT. The point should be to put a lineup around KAT that complements his game as best possible. And...since we're stuck with Wiggins, the best scenario is we put him in good situations to get volume scoring. Covington and Saric provide floor spacing for both of those guys.
Taj becomes the backup 5 and provides good team defense to the 2nd unit. Whether Thibs likes it or not, part of the goal going forward is to build for the future and developing a Saric/KAT pairing should be a priority given where Taj is in his career and where the league is at.

Replacing Butler's minutes with RoCo, giving Taj's minutes to Saric and then G's to Taj would further bump up our 3 pt attempts. If we eventually replace Teague with a PG who actually shoots 3s, we could be downright bombers from behind the line. With a 5 that can shoot 3's like KAT, we should be at the top of the league if the rest of the roster is average to above average in getting them up.

I'll be very disappointed if they don't start both of the new guys. That said, I'm used to being disappointed by Thibs. :)
If you haven't heard the Jared Dudley podcast with Doogie it's teriffic. He's the first 24 minutes. He slams Thibs for being an antiquated coach and plenty more. He doesn't hold back.

YEs, they should start even if it is just minimal time on the court.
I am interested to see how the two players are used.

Hopefully with the new talent we'll spread them out, move the ball and let them go. If that happens Teague might feel free to take more. The way it stands now is with Saric and Cov we have 4 guys that can make 3 pt shots. Teague would be 5.
If we get away from iso, spread them out and space the floor Teague will get a lot more drives to the basket. We have the potential to be one hell of an exciting offense. BTW, Towns, Wigs and Saric can drive the lane too.

I think Thibs will start Covington tonight, but he will surely stick with Taj at the 4 for the short-term, and I'm not holding my breath for him to start SARIC at all this year. He clearly didn't appreciate Belly's game, but, maybe since he traded for Saric, he will give the Towns/Saric front court a chance at some point. If he doesn't try it it will be such a waste because we won't know if it's going to work long term.

Now that was funny. But I don't know why Taj would have to play C. I still prefer Dieng at the spot and hopefully with a smart coach (insert joke) he would have Rose come off the bench and tell him to shot. Let Dieng and Taj rebound or get the putbacks for the inevitable misses from Rose. I have to say I'm excited (partially) for tonight.

My guess is Tyus and Okogie are out of the rotation for now. And Dieng sees an even bigger reduction in minutes.
Teague Wiggins Covington Taj KAT Rose Saric Tolly Dieng

Teague Wiggins Covington Taj KAT Rose Saric Tolly Dieng I expect you're right that Dieng sees fewer minutes. He has too if Saric is going to play. I think Okogie stays in the rotation though even if it's fewer minutes. He's the only real backup wing. Unless we play Tolly or Saric at the 3?

My guess is Rose will be the primary back-up at both guard positions, and Saric is going to play some SF because we have too damn many PFs that Thibs wants to play.

Teague Wiggins Covington Taj KAT Rose Saric Tolly Dieng I wouldn't be surprised if Dieng is out and either Tyus or Okogie are in but at a limited basis. Saric and Taj probably can take up 5-6 minutes each backing up KAT (Saric played some 5 for Philly).

I think we need to go 10 deep. Most teams are doing that. Some use even more. I can't help but think Okogie is the 2nd unit SG.
I'd like to see Dieng, Taj, Tolly, Obi-Wan Okogie and Rose be that primary 2nd group. Bring them in at the 3 min mark of the 1st. 3 of those guys are good defenders and most can score a little.
Thinking back to past starting groups of Foye, Jaric, Brewer, Gomes and Jefferson.... Our 2nd 5 look pretty good by comparison.
Depending on foul trouble is where things get interesting. Tyus might find some minutes there.
Tyus is going to lose out here I'm afraid. You have to find a way to play Josh. Josh is clearly the priority of the two.

Sure wish the NBA allowed for substituting fewer than 5 guys at once... (rofl)

I don't think its done that often. 5 bench guys is most likely going to dig you a hole. Good coaches like to keep a few of their best players on the floor at all times. And I don't like that line-up. Tolliver can barely move his feet enough to defend PFs. Putting him at SF is just asking for trouble. And Tolliver is the only reliable 3 point shooter in the group.

Interesting.
When the ESPN guy asked KAT about the new teammates first thing he said was they’re amazing humans, amazing character guys and they have such amazing talents as well.
