You guys are hilarious. Teague is averaging 7.5 assists per game (top 10). He's not a horrible passer; he's just inconsistent and sometimes hesitates when he should pull the trigger. But I've also seen him pull the trigger only to have his teammates not be ready for the pass, which can make a guy gunshy. He's an average PG and always has been, but he'll be fine for a couple of years if need be. Which PG we choose after him is going to be a key decision for this franchise, as KAT will be entering his prime as a player and we will need to make sure the core group of players around him is really good, because we will still have a huge chunk of the team's salary tied up in one completely unproductive player (Wiggins). No room for error with the other players, with his max contract weighing the franchise down. That's from dominating the ball and having a tendency to wait until the last second to pass, forcing his teammate to shoot. Just watch him, try to throw a basic entry pass, a lob or feed the post. Its shockingly bad. He's a small SG that is trying to play the point without any of the instincts or feel for the position. He'd be so much better in a Lou Williams 6th man type of role.

My thoughts exactly. Plays 31 minutes, dominating the ball, passing to Kat = you better get at least 7 assists. He should be getting more. Trading Teague for the right return would be huge for this team going forward. It would create cap space, open up minutes for Okogie and get Rose back to PG where he belongs.

I don't agree. I think he makes some really nifty passes, but then he also has moments like you describe where I'm yelling at the TV for him to make the pass. Again, I think he's just inconsistent, and I'm not entirely sure why. When he gets pissed off or has some sort of beef with the opposing player he can really take it to them; other times he looks somewhat disinterested or confused. I think he is just cursed with being an average NBA player, instead of an elite one. Everyone hates Teague, but I guarantee if we analyzed most of the players on the roster play-by-play we would be identifying a lot of bone-head plays by many of them. Pick on Taj tonight and write down every time he doesn't box out his man, or mistimes a rebound, or gets the ball taken away from him. And then come on here and only talk about those particular plays. I guarantee he'll seem just as bad as Teague when evaluated through that prism.

I don't hate Teague at all, I just think he's horribly miscast as a PG.
He's a solid 3pt shooter and he can blow by just about anyone and get to the basket at will. You saw it in the first quarter against Cleveland where he knew Sexton couldn't do anything to stop him and he just attacked him relentlessly. That's the Teague we need.
But as a PG you can actually see him thinking about what to do next out there. Its why he pounds the ball so much, or is so often a few beats slow delivering a pass. Its not instinctive for him at all. And he's not a good passer. He rarely hits guys in rhythm and almost never puts the ball in their shooting "pocket". He has no aggressiveness as a PG because you can see he's trying to find a balance between what he wants to do and what he thinks he should do.
He was so much better under Budenholzer because he played in a much more wide-open offense (although he still struggled with his hesitancy to shoot the ball).
Have him come off the bench with instructions to just shoot when open and drive whenever you can and he'd be a 6th man of the year candidate. Its a role where his poor defense and lack of PG skills would be so much less of a problem.
I also think he comes off as a pretty cool guy and I absolutely LOVE how he's always willing to call out Thibs on his bullshit to the public.

I think his outdated game is sneakily hurtful to the team. He's about as bad of a PF fit as you can put next to KAT.

I love that group of 5. You could exchange KAT for Dieng too. Those 5 would be good too except for possible lack of backcourt offense.
One thing you get with Tyus out there is great spacing and ball movement. Tyus can get the ball to anybody whereas Teague can't. I never realized Teague was such a horrible passer until he came here.
Teague's lack of awareness is epic. Last night Towns gets the ball in the post with 5 seconds left on the clock, so he passes it to Rose who immediately passed it to a wide open Teague with 1 second on the clock. Did Teague make the shot? No! He didn't even shoot it! He passed it to Cov with less than a second left on the clock. By then Cov, who has no chance, is left standing there as the buzzer goes off. Anybody else not the coaches favorite gets the immediate hook. Teague drives me nuts that way.
Then there is the 1st half Teague who played pretty well. At least he was decisive and made a few shots.
So you're advocating that we just switch our starters for our bench players, aside from Covington? Brilliant! We should give them all max contracts too. Maybe KAT will learn a thing or two from watching the sweet moves of Gorgui on the court. You are missing the whole point totally and completely. I am not advocating we switch our starters for bench players. I'm saying we have enough talent to essentially start 11 guys and that different combinations of players would do well together. This is a rotation question mostly and a way to lower our starters minutes.
I want to see Okogie and Tolliver get some run. Those guys sitting on the bench need to feel like part of the team. Even getting 8 minutes per helps.
From a curiosity POV, I'd like to see what Luol Deng has left. There is no reason you couldn't throw him in with the 2nd unit and take a look.

That is exactly right. I never realized he was such a bad passer when watching him from a distance. His awareness of the shot clock might be the lowest in the NBA. Sometimes I wonder if he's trying to get Thibs to pull him but Thibs doesn't pull favorites.

He comes off as a nice intelligent guy who I want to root for. I was one of the people who liked getting Teague in free agency. Not so much what we paid for him though. Levine told me he wasn't the right guy and that he had passing and other problems. I hadn't seen that previously on limited exposure to him. Sure enough Levine was right.
Just now Teague makes a nice pass to Wigs who blows a layup to start the game! Teague needs to do far more of that.
Ah, now Teague turns over the ball dribbling into traffic! Maddening.
