HTB had a short with Austin Rivers recently, and he mention Kat playing the four, and how he’d sometimes try to go down and call for the ball down low.
What’s so goofy to me is whether people are talking Rudy giving up stuff, or Kat, to me it’s all resolved by playing normal offense/basketball. Kat upper trap, Rudy lower, Ant and Mike driving the rock. It feels like we’ve taken a four year round about way to break basketball, only to be coming back around to the idea we could just play normal basketball. Free lancing Kat not good, but a Kat above the break spacing for Ant and Rudy will be gangbusters. I’ll never understand how that wasn’t the starting point once we got Rudy. The idea that the only way teams can play offense now is having four guys stand around the three point, and having one guy go off the dribble was always absurd. It’s like yes, if that’s how you are choosing to play, you can do that, it’s a style that might even be beneficial to undersized teams, but it seems like we say this is the only way Kat can work, or Ant can work, when all of basketball history up to 2017-18 tells us otherwise.
And then second group, spread it out do the small ball, Kat at five, or space for Ant to just attack the rim.
Offensively it should have been seamless, but if our plan was to have Kat, Lo, and Ant take turns playing hero ball (within their respective “bumpers”) that for sure is not a reliable offense.
Kat’s role in that first group should look like d-lo, effectively a release when the ball swings back out after the initial drive/attack, and that can come above the break or midrange for his pump and go rim attacks. It should have never started with him, debating whether or not he can drive.

"and how KAT and Rudy will likely stagger their minutes more often this season."
Smart move. Good to hear.

Their deal is coming due any day now. We can only hope they work it out. I wonder what their contingency plan is.

I read something NBA would pick up games of local markets if those deals fell through. Not sure where that would be, because I assume the idea is if you paid for Bally, and that falls apart, you can stream elsewhere showing you paid for that service or something. Maybe you get to log into league pass or youtube then?

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Bally BSN, is in bankruptcy and that is being resolved right now. We don't know how it will play out if they can reorganize or not.
They have a deal with Comcast that I'm concerned about it now going forward hence contingency plans. I think somehow things will get worked out with or without Sinclair.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere (a while ago) that the league would take over the broadcasts. I dont think we're in danger of losing the ability to see the Wolves. At least I hope not.

Obligatory blurb about how one of the Wolves is taller or stronger.

x.com/DaneMooreNBA/status/1707463669834027459?s=20In listening to a different NBA podcast they were discussing the Knicks and why they're so good at offensive rebounding and the guest said it's in part because Mitchell Robinson is really good at rebounding missed floaters. The Wolves don't have anyone really that shoots a floater which do seem conducive to offensive rebounds. A floater usually is because the shooter is drawing the defender towards him and they have to float it over them (usually a big). This leaves the big open to rebound a shot that is coming softer off the rim if it misses. If Ant could learn a floater and if Rudy spends more time in the dunker spot, our offensive rebounding should improve. And to the quote on Rudy, a hook shot or floater/push shot would help him a lot. He's a great finisher when all the way at the rim, but anything else looks rough.
Another thing on NY is that they apparently have specific ways to handled offensive rebounds to increase 3 pt attempts. If a big gets a rebound outside the restricted area, they are supposed to pass to the corner (someone supposed to cut there) to try to get more 3s. It's one of the best ways to get open 3s as the defense is all out of position as they were going for the rebound. If the Wolves don't do this, they should.

I'd like to consider myself a pretty big fan. But was anyone else caught completely off guard that media day was yesterday?
Maybe I work too much.

I was aware just because I had listened to a pod where they talked about early camp because of the trip to the middle east for preseason.

The nice thing about getting older is you have all this knowledge and experience you've soaked up over the years. The shitty thing is you cant remember it. Actually, I'm still in my 50's so not that old..but to be truthful it IS when you start to notice that you dont remember stuff like you used to. But on the plus side you can afford season tickets! I just cant remember where my seats are.

I'm older than you kingsxman and my memory is much worse but you can't forget something you didn't know about in the first place. :)
I'm not sad about it though. Last year took a lot out of me. Even though on paper I believe we have the best team ever, they have a lot to prove to me before I'm going to get super excited.

One of the things I've noticed in the few days leading up to media day yesterday is the commentary surrounding McDaniels' extension. From everything it sounds like, it's been very cordial and good faith. In Jonny K's article about Jaden, he mentions that Connelly pulled Jaden to the side at one point recently and talked to him about just where the team stood on him and how important he is to what they do. I loved reading that. It gives me faith in Connelly as a GM. He's so much more human than Rosas was and really wants to reward his own guys. It's something I think competent organizations do.
How many times in history have we heard of players wanting to come back to the Wolves too? But so far we've had KAT sign a THIRD contract with us (after as much hesitancy as is humanly possible signing the second), Anthony Edwards signing a max, Jaden McDaniels wants to come back, Naz Reid turned down more money because he wanted to come back, and we've gotten quality players like NAW and Kyle Anderson into town. That, to me, is tremendous growth as an organization. We're not perfect, but I think Lore, A-Rod, and Connelly are getting us going in the right direction.

BTW, we had a discussion recently about who should be alpha. Kat or Ant. Who's team is it. I thought is was both their team. Well, Jonny K just had a piece in the Athletic about just that.
Headline is "Are the Wolves Anthony Edwards’ or Karl-Anthony Towns’ team? Who cares, they say."
From the Athletic: "Whose team is it?
It may not be asked to them outright on Thursday, but it has already been omnipresent on debate shows, podcasts and talk radio. Towns has been the face of the franchise for nine years, is on a max contract and has been at the center of how the Timberwolves have been built almost since he was drafted No. 1 in 2015. Edwards is the ascending star, fresh off a run with Team USA in the FIBA World Cup and armed with a new max extension and a signature shoe from Adidas. That must mean a power struggle is on the way, right?
“That’s what people try to do, man,” Edwards said. “They try to, like, break you up. Who’s the best player, you or KAT? Or who should take the last shot, you or KAT? And I don’t think it’s about any of that.”
Exactly what I argued recently. Just like KG and Pierce it's all about winning. Not who's alpha.

Exactly what I argued recently. Just like KG and Pierce it's all about winning. Not who's alpha. Yeah, and they are doing different things on the court. Which is the main thing. Or they should be. We should not be like can we still use Towns like Jokic or Giannis? Ant's clearly the best player, but his skills really compliment Kat. I don't see much overlap there. Give the keys to Ant and Minnesota Mike!

One thing I have noticed is Ant going out of his way to say Kat's going to have a monster year, Kat's MVP.
Is this laying the ground work for the fluffening? What happens if Kat, Gob, Ant are awesome together?
I am also curious as to will we see Dire Wolves lineup this year? And will that look like Ant, McD, Reid, Kat, Gobert? Or maybe that's Kyle in place of Reid.
And then what is kind of the base lineups for our secound unit, small ball Hellcat group. Shake, NAW, Kyle, Reid, Kat?

All that has raised expectations for Edwards entering his fourth season. “I’m going to need my teammates to do it,” Edwards said. “I can’t do anything without my teammates. As long as we go out there as a group of five, whoever’s on the court, and we come together and we win and I do what I do individually, I think whatever the next step people are expecting me to take I will take, but it has to be with my teammates.” – via Jamal Collier @ ESPN

Looks like we owe Steve Kerr a big debt of gratitude: At the Minnesota Timberwolves’ media day, Edwards told reporters about a career-changing pre-draft workout with Steve Kerr and Golden State Warriors personnel. “I thought I was working hard. When he came, I was going through drills and he kept stopping them, like, ‘That’s all you got? That’s all you got?’ And I’m like, ‘Bruh, I’m going hard as you want me to go. What you want me to do? I’m sweating crazy.’”Then the Warriors took Edwards to dinner and let him know that even if they had the No. 1 pick, they wouldn’t have selected him, since he “didn’t work hard enough.” Golden State’s scouting might be questionable. After all, they took James Wiseman with the second pick, one ahead of All-Star LaMelo Ball and ten ahead of All-Star Tyrese Haliburton. But their approach certainly motivated Edwards. “Me and my trainer riding home after dinner and we’re just talking like we got to pick it up,” Edwards said. “I don’t know how, I don’t know what we got to do, but we got to pick it up. After that. I became a madman at the gym.”
There’s no hard feelings between Kerr and Edwards, who thrived playing for the Warriors coach at the FIBA World Cup this summer. As for the criticism, Edwards said, “They played a huge role in where I am today.” Where he is today is a 22-year-old budding superstar who just signed a maximum rookie extension with Minnesota. As Kerr says, he’s “unquestionably the guy.” Edwards’ stellar performance at the World Cup may have also been motivated by Kerr challenging him. Originally, Edwards was supposed to come off the bench for Team USA while Cameron Johnson started. Kerr told Edwards he envisioned a role similar to the one Dwyane Wade played for the 2008 Redeem Team, coming off the bench while Kobe Bryant started. The young Timberwolf wasn’t having it, telling The Athletic, “He said Dwyane Wade came off the bench when Kobe played. I was like, all right, we don’t have a Kobe, but all right.” By Team USA’s second scrimmage, Edwards was in the starting lineup. And he was working very hard in practice. www.goldenstateofmind.com/2023/9/29/23895468/timberwolves-anthony-edwards-says-warriors-played-huge-role-in-stardom?_gl=1*1en4qwu*
